Some recent failures of Russian carrier rockets while trying to put into orbit communications satellites pushed the Federal Space Agency of Russia to decide on initiating insurance for the launch vehicles.
According to Maxim Mysev, chief of analytic unit within the infrastructure department of the Russian Ministry of Space Communications, it was agreed on the need to insure rockets, carrying communications vehicles into space. As stated by Mr. Mysev at the Satellite Russia Conference, this year all the carrier rockets, launching telecommunications satellites, will be insured.
The same satellites were also insured before putting into orbit, while the launch vehicles weren’t insured by the Roskosmos Agency. Now in case of a launch failure or any technical failure, the satellite communication operators will be able to pay not only the production of a new spacecraft, but also the construction of a new carrier rocket.
We shall recall that in 2015 it is planned to put into orbit the vehicles like Express AM7, Express AM8 and Express AMU1.
Carrier rockets will be subject to insurance as well
