By 2020, 90% of the Belarusians will enjoy wireless internet

In 2020, 90 in 100 Belarus’ residents will be able to go online using WiFi.

According to the news agency BELTA quoting Sergei Popkov, the Minister of Communications and Informatization of Belarus, these are the strategic goals set in the State Program to Develop Digital Economy and Information Society for 2016- 2020.

The State Program aims at providing required conditions to implement information communications technologies for changing human life and activities, as well as creating and developing digital economy, information society, and e-government.

The achievement of this strategic goal provides for addressing certain structural problems and implementing special programs. A particular emphasis was made by the Minister on the program aimed at building and expanding information communication infrastructure. According to this program, by 2020, 34.7 in 100 country’s residents should get access to the fixed broadband Internet, and 90 in 100 people to the wireless one.

To build and expand fixed Internet access areas, there will be applied advanced technological solutions, including multi-service networks and fiber-optic lines that provide great opportunities in terms of quality and quantity of the provided services and tools.

To expand the WiFi infrastructure, according to Sergei Popkov, the country will go on actively developing 3G and 4G (LTE) communication standards. In addition, the program involves an extensive use of resources of the national broadcasting and satellite communications.

The Program’s strategic goal determines the development of the digital TV broadcasting format, including the terrestrial TV, cable TV, and the IPTV, as well as the use of Internet signal delivery technologies.

Moreover, there will be also actively developed cloud technologies, which allow a user to access any necessary information and resource irrespective of his location.
