In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia in 2018, the Russian telecom operator “MTS Group” in cooperation with Nokia and Ericsson plans to run a 5G test network.

The MTS press office announced the start of 5G cooperation with Nokia. Earlier MTS already reported the same cooperation with Ericsson.

MTS informs about cooperation with Nokia in designing projects that use LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G technologies. One of these tests provides for running 5G network in the stadium to show videos and to render a number of other services during that mega sporting event. Last year, in the statement on starting cooperation with Ericsson in the area of next generation internet communications, MTS announced its plans to demonstrate the performance of 5G during the FIFA World Cup in 2018, as well as announced the launch of a 5G test network in 2016.

MTS expressed its confidence that the development of Internet of Things (IoT) would be the main driving force of the 5G technology development, as due to the IoT’s mass penetration the number of connected devices would be 10 or even 100 times greater than the number of connected people, which means the need for emergence of new services and applications.

Nokia has repeatedly mouthed its confidence that the 5G network architecture would incorporate functions of a Software Defined Network (SDN). Using SDN function will allow the company to partition network, so that within the overall infrastructure it could create multiple independent virtual subnetworks to meet various requirements of delay and reliability.

Nokia is involved in a number of industrial projects in Europe related to 5G, including the 5G Public Private Partnership Project, 5G NORMA (5G Novel Radio Multiservice Adaptive Network Architecture), as well as it collaborates with lots of universities with 5G training programs around the world.

Many wireless communications operators in different countries use mega sporting events to present the capabilities of the 5G Internet.

For example, earlier this month, the company Sprint announced its plans to use the football event Copa America Centenario to be held in June this year for testing 5G technology. Same as MTS, the operator is about to use Ericsson and Nokia equipment for that testing. During its tests, Sprint will focus on the delivery of streaming video from football matches.

In addition, the Korean mobile operator KT plans to run 5G shortly before the Winter Olympic Games to be held in PyeongChang in 2018. And the Japanese company NTT DoCoMo is preparing to show 5G capabilities during the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.
