The Chairman of the National Commission for the State Regulation of Communications and Information (NCCIR) outlined plans for Ukraine to join the countries designing common standards for the fifth generation (5G) of mobile telecommunications.

In his blog on the portal “Novoye Vremya”, the Chairman of the NCCIR Alexander Zhyvotovsky narrated that Ukraine was conducting talks to take part in designing generally accepted standards for 5G technologies in Europe.

“We are negotiating with one of the operators for the European Union to put Ukraine in the list of testing countries”, as the Chairman of the NCCIR says.

Mr. Zhyvotovsky also adds that Europe is aware of the powerful IT-potential of our country. Ukrainian programmers can join the team of 5G software developers.

“In cooperation with equipment providers like Ericsson and Huawei, Ukraine is able to set up test platforms for testing 5G-technologies”, as Mr. Zyivotovsky adds.

Alexander Zhyvotovsky also draws attention to the European Union’s concerns about the deployment of the fifth-generation networks.

“The European Union became seriously aware of preparing the 5G implementation against the backdrop of not so successful experience in implementing LTE in Europe. It turned out that the fourth generation of mobile telecommunications did not attract so many users, as long as the Europeans were lacking a mass demand for HD-video in their Smartphones. So today, 4G plays the part of an icing on the cake … Therefore right now, even before designing 5G common standards, Europe is talking about the need for building new networks, as integral as the 2G ones”, as the Chairman of the NCCIR specifies.

Let us recall that in February of present year, it was announced that the UK, Ukraine, and Russia would join their efforts to launch 5G. Later on, Günther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, stated that Ukraine would deploy 5G networks by 2020.
