TV and Radio Fair, held in Kyiv during May 20/21, 2015, was represented by main satellite operators, the spacecrafts of which are used for TV and telecommunications services in Ukraine. Eutelsat, one of the largest satellite companies in the world, took part in the fair for the first time. There was a motive, for sure, we’ll tell you about it later.

In the course of the satellite conference, held within the fair, the operators’ representatives told about the latest news.
During the fair Azerkosmos presented information on the following services:
– Features of the satellite Azerspace-1 (46°W)
– Options for raising TV and Radio channels to the satellite from teleporter located in Kyiv
– Periodic service capacity (OU) and capacity leasing for a fixed period
– Brief information about the LEO satellite Azersky
– Future plans: launch in 2017 of the satellite Azerspace-2 45°W in cooperation with Intelsat
– Additional satellite communications services based on the platforms Gilat and iDirect
Mansur Seyidzade referred in detail on each item.

Onno Zonneveld from SES told about the recent developments of the satellite operator SES:
• Over 50 geostationary satellites
• Over 6 500 of TV channels
• Over 1 800 of HD TV channels
• Coverage of 312 million of households
It is possible to find more detailed results of the company in 2014 in the news item of Mediasat.
Mr. Zonneveld paid particular attention to advantages of the position 19,2°E, being the favorite one among HD-channels.

The operator Eutelsat, a new participant of the event and, apparently, a new player in the Ukrainian market, scheduled the launch of six satellites by 2017. Its fleet actually consists of 34 satellites located within 117°W and 172°E. Over 5800 of TV channels are broadcasted by satellite and are watched by 274 million of households.
Apostolos Triantafyllou from Eutelsat outlined plans for Ukraine, relative to launching satellite to the position 9°E. He pointed out that previously a Ukrainian viewer was able to receive the signal from the satellite Eutelsat 36°E, used by the Russian operators like NTV-Plus and Tricolor TV. Now, by launching a new satellite to the position 9°E, Eutelsat Company would be able to provide capacities directly to the Ukrainian TV channels. Mr Triantafyllou said it in his interview to MediaSat. There are also remain actual plans of providing satellite Internet in cooperation with Datagroup and implementing Smart LNB, an innovative product of Eutelsat. More information can be found in the interview with Antonio Archidiacono.

According to Yuriy Krainiak, Managing Partner of Jurimex, the Ukrainian TV channels are distributed among the satellites as follows:

Mr. Krainiak highlighted the legal aspect of providing telecommunications services by foreign operators. According to him, the Law On Television and Radio Broadcasting does not contain any residency restrictions for telecommunications operators. We shall recall that as from 2009 Ukraine initiated launch operations of its own satellite Lybid, scheduled for early 2015. However, the launch had to be postponed for an indefinite period, as Roscosmos refused to supply Ukraine with the engine for the rocket Zenit.
Another news of the satellite market, discussed on the sidelines of TV and Radio Fair, was the information about the extinction of the DTH platform Xtra TV. Xtra TV brand was incorporated into the Media Group Ukraine. Thus, there remains only one provider Viasat in the market of Ukrainian satellite television. Can we speak of a monopoly or will someone else appear, as the holy place is never empty?
