The Russian Internet service Mail.ru will suspend delivering traffic to Ukraine. This is reported by LІGA.net.

According to the portal, Mail.ru notified Ukrainian Internet Exchange Points that it supposedly became too expensive to provide direct connection. Mikhail Polovinka, Development Director at the Ukrainian Internet Exchange Point UA-IX (DP “UkrMOT”), informed that Mail.ru sent a message stating that the Group would give up delivering traffic to Ukraine as from December 20.

A similar letter was received by the Internet Exchange Point Giganet.UA, which warned other traffic exchange partners of Mail.ru’s exit: “Dear partners of Giganet.UA! At the request of the Mail.ru Company we would like to inform you that Mail.ru gives up delivering its traffic to Ukraine. Accordingly, from 20 December, 2016, their announcements will not be available on Giganet.UA. Please, plan the traffic migration”.

According to October study by TNS Kantar CMeter, Mail.ru ranks fourth in the top 25 most popular sites within Uanet.

Let us recall that the study, conducted two years ago, found out that the majority of Ukrainians kept on using Russian e-mail services.
