Russian users refuse from wired Internet. Perhaps, for the benefit of mobile network access.

In Russia in 2014 the number of wired Internet users reduced for the first time. That information was published in Vedomosti with reference to the report of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media.

At the end of the second quarter of 2016 there were 26.9 million active wired broadband Internet users in the Russian market of internet services (a decrease of 1.4 % compared to the first quarter of 2016).

However, this is not the first decrease in the number of wired Internet users. This has already happened in the second quarter of 2014, but then the rate of decrease was less noticeable – 0.3 % only.

Market players and media experts explain the fall by the fact that active users just replace the wired Internet for mobile this year. This assumption is confirmed by the figures. Thus, according to the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media, in the second quarter of this year the number of mobile Internet services subscribers increased by 3.7 % and reached 98.9 million people. However, the representatives of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media believe that talking about the current trend is still too early, because the decrease could be due to seasonal factors. And if comparing with 2015, the subscriber base of the wired Internet increased by about 6.4 % in general.

However, experts of TMT Consulting analytical agency believe that a significant reduction in the wired home Internet subscribers can be related to the general outflow of subscribers, but is too little data at the moment to make such a statements.
