The “Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network” (RTRS) started a test broadcasting in 4K/UltraHD format with multichannel sound. The broadcasts are carried out by the Ostankino Tower. This was informed to the Mediasat reporter by the RTRS’ press office.

On August 1 this year, the Ostankino Tower arranged a test broadcasting of the UHD TV channel (4K/UltraHD) in the DVB-T2 standard.

The channel broadcasts a specially prepared content for seven and a half hours. To transmit video, it is applied a new compression standard High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC or H.265), and it is almost twice as effective as the actual codec MPEG4 (H.264).

The transmitter power is 300 W. The antenna is set at a height of 415 meters. The Ultra HD signal is transmitted separately from the multiplexes on TV channel 58 (770 MHz). It can be received by any resident of Moscow and the Moscow vicinity (within a 30-km radius of the Ostankino Tower) on a TV-set supporting UHDTV/DVB-T2/HEVC.

“Along with HEVC codec, there arranged broadcasting of multichannel sound in the Dolby Digital 5.1 standard, as part of UHD/DVB-T2 signal”, as the RTRS points out.

In 2013, the RTRS became one of the first companies in Russia to present in public Ultra HD broadcasting with H.265 compression at the exhibition “NATEXPO”.

Let us recall that Russia will replace the analog TV broadcasting with the digital one (DVB-T2) in 2018.
