In late June, the satellite operator “NTV-Plus” reported on the completion of transiting channels broadcasting from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4. Thus, “NTV-Plus” became the first satellite TV platform in the Russian market, which broadcast channels fully in the MPEG-4 standard.

The information statement of “NTV-Plus” says that the transition to MPEG-4 will allow saving satellite capacities, which in turn will facilitate to increase the number of TV channels available within the service, as well as will also improve the quality of TV broadcasting.

However, within the DTH-platform of “NTV-Plus” there are eleven TV channels that go on broadcasting in MPEG-2: “Channel 5”, “Mir”, “REN TV”, “Spas”, “Friday”, “Russia 1”, “Russia K”, “Russia 24”, “TV3”, “Match TV” and “Shopping Live”. This is a forced measure, which, according to the operator, aims to retain those subscribers who, for whatever reason, missed their receiving equipment update.

The fact that “NTV-Plus” gave up MPEG-2 in favor of MPEG-4 became first known in February of present year.
